Wow! We just took off on the maiden voyage of Jaume 1, the new Fast Ferry that replaced the older vessel. So far we're loving it! It's so much larger inside than you would think. Looks like it would hold at least 800 but I think the official number is 650. Great seats, arcade area for the kids, all open inside with views up 2 levels, cafe, bar, shopping and it rides smooth as silk. The new Jaume 1 is going to be big hit!

Overall it was a pretty good experience. I don't know that I would call it great or economical...
We took the ferry express (Balearia) to Freeport and back to Ft. Lauderdale. The water on our trip out was exceptionally rough - so the sound of passengers retching was a bit much for 3 hours. Thankfully myself and my travelling partner do not suffer from motion sickness! The staff were amazing escorting people safely and going back and forth with the barf bags for many passengers.
The checked baggage fees are the same as any commercial flight, and the waiting time to board was way longer than it needed to be. You have to arrive by 6:00am but you don't actually board the ship to leave port for nearly another 3 hours...it really is unnecessary. Maybe at peak season the line-up and wait to clear customs takes that long, but I just don't see why.
Also we noticed the posted signs that prohibit the use of cell phones etc in the waiting area but then there are also signs saying there is free wifi... Totally conflicting.
